How secure is your business’ computer network? MI5 outlines risks to UK industries

BBC News reports “MI5 is working to counter ‘astonishing’ levels of cyber-attacks on UK industry”, the organisation’s chief has said.

In his first public speech for two years, Jonathan Evans warned internet “vulnerabilities” were being exploited by criminals as well as states.

In the speech on Monday evening, Mr Evans spoke of MI5’s efforts to tackle “industrial-scale processes involving many thousands of people lying behind both state sponsored cyber espionage and organised cyber crime”.

Merlin Repository Email Fallback Facility

On Monday 3rd October 2011 the BBC reported that BT suffered a critical loss of broadband on a massive scale. “The company said those affected numbered into the hundreds of thousands – about 5% of its total customers”. This left affected businesses with on-site mail servers completely in the dark and losing business as a consequence.

However, had these effected businesses been customers of Merlin, then for around £10.00 per month, they would have been able to take advantage of our email fallback service, securely storing all emails until the ADSL Broadband service is restored. During the “blackout” period, the service is also accessible in real-time, allowing affected users to access valuable e-mails using alternative methods such as Smartphones or 3G enabled Notebooks and Tablets.

Caroline Foster of Dronco Abrasives commented –

“We suffered an extensive loss of broadband several months ago and as a result could not receive email. The email fallback facility enabled us to see and respond to our customer orders. Had we not taken this service, we would have lost a significant amount of orders and damaged our customer relationships.”

Ahead in the Cloud

Cloud computing refers to the use and access of multiple server-based computational resources via internet based technologies. Cloud users may access the server resources using a computer, laptop, netbook, tablet, smart phone or other device. In cloud computing, applications and data are provided, managed and monitored by the cloud server. The data is also stored remotely in the cloud configuration.

The benefits of cloud computing:

  • Greater security
  • No server hardware onsite
  • Greater upgrade flexibility
  • Insurance hardware cover savings
  • Lower electrical consumption onsite

We are able to offer hosted services, such as remote backup facilities, email provision, SPAM filtering etc. The interest and uptake of these services has been very successful, therefore we have taken hosting to the next level – now offering a fully cloud computing solution. This may range from hosting your Merlin application to a full terminal services environment.

We have combined our extensive knowledge of virtualisation and high availability to provide all our hosted services on this platform. This configuration enables Merlin to offer a high availability server provision to all our customers at a low cost.
