By virtualising server hardware, changes to your infrastructure can be made:
- Reduction in Hardware Investment as less servers are required
- High Availability with configurations that allow for seamless 24 X 7 running if hardware fails
- Reduction of cooling and Electric Running Costs
- Backups are simplified, consolidated and centralised
- Security is improved
- Legacy applications and operating systems can be re-housed on new hardware with lower investment
Virtualisation was designed because it was identified that running servers generally use a very low percentage of the resources they have available. Therefore the idea of pooling all the memory, processing, storage and other resources together and then maximising the efficiency of this resource pool was developed. Merlin have been deploying virtualisation for several years now and we take advantage of the ability to house several similar or dissimilar operating systems on a common hardware platform. Each operating system runs independently of the other by utilising VMWARE’s virtualisation technology. This in essence means that multiple servers can pool the central resources that each offers as an individual and then dynamically offer them to the virtualised operating system environments.
Virtualisation is not only restricted to the server, by deploying Zero client hardware, standard workstation operating systems can be delivered to lower powered devices. Users no longer would have the unrestricted ability put files and applications on workstations without your knowledge. This principle is similar to that of terminal services, but alternatively offers a full workstation operating system to the end user.
Merlin have invested heavily on in the latest virtualisation technology and training for its engineers. We see this as an obvious way that the industry is going to move. Our commitment is reflected in our status as a VMWARE certified partner and we have many installations through the United Kingdom that cover a variety of solutions from consolidation of hardware to complex high availability.

BBC News reports “MI5 is working to counter ‘astonishing’ levels of cyber-attacks on UK industry”, the organisation’s chief has said. In his first public speech for two years, Jonathan Evans warned internet “vulnerabilities” were being exploited by criminals as well as states. In the speech on Monday evening, Mr Evans spoke of MI5’s efforts to […]
Merlin Repository Email Fallback Facility On Monday 3rd October 2011 the BBC reported that BT suffered a critical loss of broadband on a massive scale. “The company said those affected numbered into the hundreds of thousands – about 5% of its total customers”. This left affected businesses with on-site mail servers completely in the dark […]
Cloud computing refers to the use and access of multiple server-based computational resources via internet based technologies. Cloud users may access the server resources using a computer, laptop, netbook, tablet, smart phone or other device. In cloud computing, applications and data are provided, managed and monitored by the cloud server. The data is also stored […]
